SWELANG works to lower barriers to digital humanities and promote new research with digital tools. We provide guidance to researchers in the humanities and social sciences on language, dialects, and other aspects of Sweden's intangible cultural heritage. The focus is on the use of digital language resources and tools for collecting, processing, and accessing language data for research and development.

Consultation and Expert Support

SWELANG offers advice on the use of digital language resources and tools for Swedish and other languages in Sweden, as well as other parts of Sweden's intangible cultural heritage. SWELANG also provides expert support regarding methods, ethics, technology, and licenses, and disseminates knowledge through guidelines, workshops, and collaborative projects.

Our Collections

SWELANG collects and provides access to resources so that more researchers can use them in their studies. SWELANG offers digital access to the extensive collections at the Institute for Language and Folklore (Isof). These collections contain large amounts of linguistic data, including word, name, and term collections, dialect recordings, and folklore descriptions.

Language Tools

SWELANG offers highly specialized digital tools to identify names and places, recognize speech patterns, and enhance sources with annotation. With expert support, these tools can be customized for specific research questions within different projects and then made available for use by other researchers.

SWELANG

SWELANG is part of the European research network CLARIN — The European research infrastructure for language resources and language technology.

SWELANG collaborates with SWE-CLARIN, the Swedish part of CLARIN, and the National Language Bank (Nationella Språkbanken).

SWELANG is operated by Språkbanken Sam at the Institute for Language and Folklore (ISOF) in Uppsala and Gothenburg. The institute has a government mandate to collect, preserve, process, and disseminate scientific knowledge and materials about the Swedish language, national minority languages, Swedish sign language, Swedish dialects, and other parts of Sweden's intangible cultural heritage.
